This shop established more than 100 years ago specializes in gomadofu (smashed sesame seeds and arrowroot flour boiled then chilled to have the consistency of tofu). The gomadofu is made with an emphasis on freshness, using the running water of Koyasan. With rich sesame flavor and a puddinglike texture, it is exquisite. We recommend sprinkling wasanbon sugar on it and eating it like a dessert.

A sacred place for which Koyasan is famousDanjo Garan Sacred Temple Complex

This is a Shingon Esoteric Buddhism training hall that was the first created by Kobo Daishi. It consists of 19 temple buildings with different functions, including the Konpon Daito (large pagoda) that symbolizes Koyasan and the Kondo main hall. You can watch the Garan Junpai, in which priests go around to the various buildings while reciting sutras.

Drink the sacred water and get better at various artsNakagoto-jinja Shrine / Kuroushi no Mizu (black cow's water)

This is the water used in Nate Shuzo’s choice sake Kuroushi featured on the left page. It is named for the place name Kuroushigata that was used around the 8th century CE. The water wells up on the grounds of the Nakagoto-jinja Shrine and provides the benefit of improving abilities in many arts such as the tea ceremony and calligraphy. You can scoop up and drink the water whenever you like between 7 a.m. and 5 p.m.

A city with a lively fishing harborGenki Osaki-kan Kazamachi / Saturday market

Local marine products and vegetables are sold every Saturday directly to market-goers at this renovated fishery cooperative's warehouse that looks out on the calm waters of Osaki Bay. With plenty of side dishes made by hand using local ingredients also on sale, it is a fun place to walk and eat.

This river has such clean water that it is famous as a place to watch fireflies. You can encounter the grandeur of nature here, whether in Kamataki's potholes — large and small holes in the rock of the riverbed — or in the 30 meter drop of Fudo Waterfall, which is on a tributary that flows in Ui-Tani Valley.

This is a program in which you can learn the fundamentals of traditional maki-e (gold lacquer). You can choose the color and pattern you like, and then apply Cashew brand chemical lacquer substitute to a tray yourself. A professional craftsperson will do the final step of sprinkling the gold powder on for you, ensuring a beautiful finished product.

This is a shop specializing in gelato made by a farmer that is surrounded by forest and farm fields. There is a great variety of gelato types that change with the season. They are made with fruits such as apricot and peach as well as locally harvested vegetables. Chez Minami is a restaurant surrounded by greenery. It serves only a pre-fixed course, and uses vegetables from neighborhood farms and a farm in Kinokawa called Miyakusu Noen. The chef, who studied cooking in France, offers French and Italian dishes, including pizza cooked in a masonry oven.

Nate Shuzo

This is an old sake brewery, established 150 years ago, that specializes in umakuchi sake made without added alcohol or sugar that was fermented powerfully using somewhat hard water. Demand is growing overseas as well for this sake made with an emphasis on contract farming and attention to the individuality of the area and storehouses. A shop, a rest area exhibiting sake brewing implements and a museum are adjacent to the brewery.

This is a popular bakery opened locally 19 years ago by the proprietor. The breads are made using Japanese wheat. Varieties include home-grown fruit and foods from Kimino including chestnuts from Kishu Maruichi Noen and kabocha squash from Kiminoka. All the breads are made with plenty of ingredients and have a simple, mild flavor.

This is a bakery run in an old private home in the mountain recesses by a proprietor who was attracted by the environment of high-quality natural water. The natural bread, made with Japanese wheat flour and homemade natural yeast and then baked in a masonry oven, has the powerful flavor that comes from baking in a wood-fired oven. It is also possible to dine in.

This is a composite store located in an old rice granary. It consists of the owner's Kishu Maruichi Noen, which sells processed products and agricultural products such as apricots and chestnuts, The Stand, which serves specialty coffee made with beans roasted on site and local water, and Mominoki Shokudo, which serves a menu centered on vegetables grown in the Kihoku region.
