Taijima Island *At right.

This island appears to be shaped like a sea bream when seen from the opposite shore. The cave that makes up the eye of the fish was carved by the force of water. Next to it is Kuroshima Island (at left), which has many caves.

The shape, which includes an eye, a dorsal fin and a tail fin, makes it truly look like a sea bream! Consisting of conglomerate that is easily weathered and eroded, it was created by the tides and waves over the course of many years. The best part is seeing the morning sun or the moon enter the eye of the sea bream.

[ What is Nanki Kumano Geopark? ]

This is a place created by the action of the earth and whose value as natural heritage is well-recognized. Nanki Kumano Geopark took on its current form through changes in the earth's crust, weathering and erosion of three types of soil. These were created through the deposition of sand and mud due to plate submersion and the action of magma. You can feel the mystery of water in these mysterious sculptures.

This is part of a dike formed some 1.5 million to 1.4 million years ago. It is unusual for having undergone little weathering or erosion despite its enormous size, and has been designated a natural monument. It co-stars with the Koza-gawa River to make up a magnificent spectacle.
Shihara Coast

Two layers separated in their creation by 20 million years overlap here. They are said to have been the bottom of the ocean long ago. The huge stone wall full of holes that look like they were eaten by vermin has a miraculous appearance. There is a shrine dedicated to a god of matchmaking, and you can find a heart-shaped tafoni there.
Sarashi Kubiso

The round rocks that dot the coast are called the Sarashi Kubi (meaning a prisoner's head put on public display) layer because they look just like such heads. They were formed by past avalanches of earth and rocks on the ocean floor.

If you look at them up close, you will be surprised to find that the boulders and rocks are not rolling free, but are all connected to the surface of the earth. There are countless such rocks large and small, ranging from 1 meter in diameter to pea size, and they make up a remarkable spectacle at low tide.
