The Southern Area is an appealing place that combines a free and tropical feeling with the mystery of magnificent nature. It contains Shirahama, a popular beach resort, and the World Heritage Site of the Kumano Sanzan (Three Grand Shrines of Kumano) and Kumano Kodo pilgrimage routes. The area's many leisure activities are sure to satisfy active visitors, such as diving, whale watching, riding in river boats on the Kumano River, and riding on logging rafts on the Kitayama River. In addition, the sacred place called Kumano features a fusion of nature and religious faith. Nachi Falls (which is Japan's tallest waterfall) and other locations are also renowned as prominent places of power. In addition, walking along the mystical Kumano Kodo pilgrimage routes and thinking of their ancient history and traditions will surely be an unforgettable experience. The food culture in the Southern Area includes ume (an apricot like fruit); Minabe Town and Tanabe City produce the highest quality and greatest quantity of ume in Japan. Umeboshi (salt-pickled ume), which can be described as the starting point of Japan's food culture, are of course available, as well as umeshu (ume liqueur) and desserts made from une (which are recently gaining in popularity). Unique local cuisine still has a strong presence in the Southern Area, including mehari zushi(sushi wrapped in pickled mustard leaves), sanma zushi (sushi made with Pacific saury), and chagayu (roasted tea rice porridge). The area is also dotted with famous hot springs that have been beloved by travelers and locals for many long years, such as Shirahama Spa, Katsuura Spa, Hongu Onsen-kyo, and Ryujin Spa. There you can feel the stress of traveling melt away.
