Koya / Kumano is the place which have been regarded as sacred areas from ancient times, and sacred sites which sooth and revive people. Some strange shaped rocks created by wind and wave, and Japan's largest grand fall is the art of the great nature. There is something in Wakayama that attracts people.

Wakayama Castle1.Wakayama Castle
Wakayama Castle was constructed in 1585 by Toyotomi Hidenaga, the younger brother of Hideyoshi. Then, 10th child of Tokugawa Ieyasu, Yorinobu, became the lord of the castle and Kishu Tokugawa Family resided in this castle. There is a famous maple tree garden inside this castle which is known as Momijidani garden.

Kimii-dera Temple2.Kimii-dera Temple
Kimii-dera Temple is the abbreviation of "Kimii-san Kongouhou-ji Gokoku-in". In the precincts, there are three well water of "Kisshou sui", "Youryuu sui", and "Shoujou sui" which have been selected as the best hundred waters and have the origin of the name of Kimii-dera Temple. This is a famous temple built in Nara era, whose "Sakuramon", "Shourou", and "Tahouto" are national important cultural assets.

Tosho-gu Shrine3.Tosho-gu Shrine
This shrine was built by Tokugawa Yorinobu, the first lord of Kishu-han in 1621. The construction of the shrine pavilions is called as "Gongen-zukuri". This shrine is also called as "Kansai Nikko" with full-colored and ingenious engravings of master craftsman Hidari Jingoro, and vivid paintings of Kano school and Tosa school.

Kokawa-dera Temple4.Kokawa-dera Temple
This is an old temple built in 770. It is the third amulet-issuing office of Westland 33 places with the present main hall is said to be the largest scale among them. Although they were burnt down by Toyotomi Hideyoshi, the present halls and towers were rebuilt in Edo era. "Hondo", "Daimon", "Chumon", and "Senju-do" are designated as national important cultural properties.

Negoro-dera Temple5.Negoro-dera Temple
This is a famous temple built in 1130 by Kakuban, the opener of Shingi-Shingon Buddhism. The sect enjoyed its influence as one of the biggest military gang with more than 10,000 armed priests called as "Negoroshu" in the late Muromachi era. "Daitou", a national treasure, "Taishi-do", an important cultural asset, the garden of main lodging, a national scenic beauty preserve the traces of the old days when they were built.

Niutsuhime Shrine6.Niutsuhime Shrine
This old shrine has beautiful vermilion colored arched bridge over Kagami-ike(Mirror pond) in the precincts. It was originated in 370, when Niutsuhime, a younger sister of Goddess of the Sun, was enshrined. Also, Koya-daijin, who is said to have lead Kukai to Koya is enshrined. Four pavilions and the tower gate are designated as important cultural assets of Japan.
